Tick Tips
Ticks are active year-round, but become much more prevalent as the weather becomes warmer. They are known for spreading serious diseases through their bite, most commonly including Lyme disease and Anaplasmosis. We at Dog Adventures want to share our tips for keeping you and your dog tick-free this season!
Here are some helpful tips to keep your dog safe and healthy!
If a tick becomes attached:
Grip the tick tightly by the head with sharp tweezers or tick key, and Twist the tick and slowly pull it out. Do not pull the tick straight out; if pulled at an angle, the tick mouth/head could become stuck in the skin. Once the tick is removed, be sure you got the head of the tick and to clean the area with a damp soapy washcloth. Once dry, you can then apply little bit of rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide on cotton swab to the affected area. We recommend putting the tick in a bag and sending a picture to your vet! This can help determine treatment and when to take your dog into the vet after a tick bite. It’s free to send an email and ask!
We highly encourage our dogs use some form of flea/tick preventative. We find that topical medications have been most successful, as they both repel and kill, such as K9 Advantix. In addition to a topical medication, we recommend a tick spray to help deter ticks from you and your pet. Wondercide: Flea & Tick. After each outing, we start checking for ticks by looking and use a lint roller to pull off baby ticks or ticks that haven't attached. Then do a thorough search with our hands in the fur/hair.
